Afe Babalola University Protest: Over 60 Students in Police Net



The Afe Babalola University (ABUAD), in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, authority has disclosed that the students who went on a violent protest on Sunday night into Monday morning were those with poor academic results.




It was learnt that some students had alleged that unknown men who covered their faces with clothes overpowered the security men, stormed a female hostel, destroyed cars and other school properties worth millions.

The school management, however, called the security agency to bring normalcy to the campus. Greennews.ng gathered that over 60 students suspected to have partook in the pandemonium have been arrested by the police.

The Public Relations Officer of the school, Mr Tunde Olofintila, dismissed claims by the students that a policeman mistakenly shot and injured a student, noting that that the violence was perpetrated by academically deficient students, who were afraid of being expelled after the ongoing first semester examinations.

His words: “As it was in some public universities, the skirmish was engineered and orchestrated by those who were not doing well academically and who are not prepared to improve on their academic performances.

“But rather than continue with the examination, those with low academic grades, some of who did not have clearance for the first semester and or did not register for the examination, went on a rampage and in the process vandalized some property, the cost of which is being assessed,” he buttressed.

The unknown students raided the school cafeterias, Owolabi hall, the college of Engineering and a talent discovery building. It was also reported that a sum of N10 million naira kept in the Accountant office in one of the cafeterias was also looted.
